Written on October 25, 2008

WASHINGTON — Areva SA, the French nuclear engineering firm, and Northrop Grumman Corp. will build a $360 million plant in Virginia to make large reactor parts, anticipating a growth in U.S. nuclear power plant construction.

The two companies said Thursday that the 300,000-square-foot facility will be near Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding’s plant at Newport News, Va., and produce 500 jobs. It is expected to be completed in 2011.

Areva is one of three major nuclear power plant manufacturers, and its reactor design has been selected for at least seven new U.S. reactors.

AmerenUE signed an agreement with UniStar Nuclear in 2007 to develop an Areva-designed nuclear plant adjacent to the Callaway plant in central Missouri.

Areva also is a partner in UniStar with Baltimore-based Constellation Energy Group, the power producer being acquired by Warren Buffett’s MidAmerican Energy Holdings Co.
