Global chip sales reach $159.7 billion in August, up 144% from a year earlier, SIA says
Cumulative sales for 2026 passed $1 trillion through August for the first time, the Semiconductor Industry Association said; it projects more than $1.6 trillion for the year.

Worldwide semiconductor sales reached $159.7 billion in August, 144.3% more than a year earlier, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association, which said cumulative sales for 2026 have passed $1 trillion for the first time.
What happened
August sales were up 8% from the July total of $147.9 billion and compared with $65.4 billion in August 2025. SIA, which compiles the figures from World Semiconductor Trade Statistics data, said the monthly numbers are a three-month moving average. It represents 99% of the US semiconductor industry by revenue and nearly two-thirds of non-US chip companies.
SIA President and Chief Executive Michael Robbins said the market "grew for the 18th consecutive month in August, with sales into the Americas, the Asia Pacific, and China driving strong and sustained year-to-year growth." He said annual global sales "have already surpassed $1 trillion through August, reaching this major milestone for the first time ever," and that sales are projected to exceed $1.6 trillion in 2026.
By region

What to watch
SIA publishes the figures monthly; the September total is the next data point. The release does not break the increase down by product type, so it does not say how much came from chips for artificial intelligence.
