What happened

The FDIC's table shows the following national deposit rates. The FDIC says they are based on information from the last business day of the prior month.

Product October 2026 September 2026 October 2025
Savings 0.38% 0.37% 0.40%
Interest checking 0.07% 0.07% 0.07%
Money market 0.63% 0.63% 0.59%
12-month CD 1.76% 1.73% 1.68%
24-month CD 1.55% 1.61% 1.44%

The table also lists 3-month CDs at 1.14%, 6-month CDs at 1.39%, 36-month CDs at 1.39% and 60-month CDs at 1.41%.

How the figures are built

The FDIC defines the national rate as "the average of rates paid by all insured depository institutions and credit unions for which data is available, with rates weighted by each institution's share of domestic deposits." Savings and interest checking rates use a $2,500 account tier, while money market and CD rates average the $10,000 and $100,000 tiers. The figures are used to set a cap on the rates that banks that are not well capitalized may offer, not as a guide to the best rates available to savers.

Next to each product the FDIC lists the yield on comparable Treasury obligations, which it uses for the cap. For 12-month CDs it was 4.54%, against 4.16% in the September release.

What to watch

The FDIC publishes the figures on the third Monday of each month.
